Christian raised his head and pulled her against his chest. She muttered a small sound of protest at his withdrawal, which he soothed by threading his fingers through her hair and making a shushing sound deep in his throat. ''D.J., there's a lot about me you don't understand. I'm sure you've wondered why I back away from anything physical between us."
She nodded. An inner voice told her not to speak and break the intimate spell shimmering between them. Perhaps he would confide the story of his parents. Then she wouldn't feel like such a sap after confiding her deepest secrets while under the influence.
"I understand you so much better after last night."
D.J. fought not to cringe at the reminder.
"There's a reason I behave this way, and I need you to understand. I promised my father before"
He stopped speaking. After a moment of silence D.J. pulled back and looked up into Christian's face. The pain she saw there made her stomach clench with dread. Maybe she didn't want to hear the truth.
Christian glanced down at her, and a small smile curved his lips, though the expression didn't reach his eyes. "I promised him I would wait for the right woman. My one true soul mate. He and my mother had that kind of marriage before"
His voice broke once more, and D.J., needing to help him through the pain, spoke into the silence
